EFNNMAThe European Forum of National Nursing and Midwifery Associations (EFNNMA) is the voice of nursing and midwifery within WHO European Region.Working in partnership and strategically with WHO and other key stakeholders we aim to influence health policy, improve the quality of health services and the health of people across the 53 Member States of the Region. We are passionate advocates of the central and unique contribution that Nurses and Midwives make to individual and population health and well-being across Europe and are committed to ensuring both professions are supported to deliver excellence in their practice. As the nature of care changes we believe that strengthening and developing the nursing and midwifery workforce through the provision of lifelong learning and research delivers excellence in public health and people-centered healthcare.

EFNNMA and WHO celebrate the role of nurses and midwifes in strengthening people-centered health systems

For International Day of a Midwife (May 5) and International Nurses Day (May 12) the European Forum of National Nursing and Midwifery Associations celebrates the contributions of the nurses and midwives across the WHO European Region and beyond who make people’s health their core business. This year we celebrate the critical role that nurses and midwives play in strengthening people-centered health systems. For this EFNNMA has collaborated with the WHO Regional Office for Europe to promote the European compendium of good practices in nursing and midwifery towards Health 2020 goals to highlight the contributions of nurses and midwives to health systems in six important ways:

·         Nurses and midwives play a key role in empowering people and engaging patients.

·         Nurses and midwives make vital contributions to upstream and downstream public health services.

·         Nurses and midwives are fundamental to coordinating patient care and ensuring a comprehensive continuum of services.

·         Nurses and midwives are valuable repositories of innovation for rethinking service delivery.

·         Nurses and midwives can help break down boundaries across professions, levels of care and settings.

·         Nurses and midwives manage processes for quality and better outcomes.

In order to ensure these contributions are optimized EFNNMA urges associations to engage with all relevant national stakeholders to support and move forward on the priorities outlined in the recently launched European Strategic Directions for strengthening nursing and midwifery towards Health 2020.
