EFNNMAThe European Forum of National Nursing and Midwifery Associations (EFNNMA) is the voice of nursing and midwifery within WHO European Region.Working in partnership and strategically with WHO and other key stakeholders we aim to influence health policy, improve the quality of health services and the health of people across the 53 Member States of the Region. We are passionate advocates of the central and unique contribution that Nurses and Midwives make to individual and population health and well-being across Europe and are committed to ensuring both professions are supported to deliver excellence in their practice. As the nature of care changes we believe that strengthening and developing the nursing and midwifery workforce through the provision of lifelong learning and research delivers excellence in public health and people-centered healthcare.

Roadmap to guide GSDNM implementation

Roadmap to guide GSDNM implementation
Roadmap to guide implementation of the Global Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery in the WHO European Region
On the 10th of December WHO Europe Launched the Roadmap to guide the implementation of the Global Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery (GSDNM). The Roadmap document was developed under the leadership of Ms Maggie Langins with the full support of Regional Director Dr. Hans Kluge and the leadership team at WHO Euro. Ms. Langins headed up the work with Government Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officers of the Euro Region, WHO Collaborating centers for nursing and midwifery and the EFNNMA.
The Regional Roadmap builds on the GSDNM developed under the leadership of WHO Chief Nurse Elizabeth Iro at WHO HQ in Geneva. The GSDNM was formally adopted by the World Health Assembly in May 2021. WHO Chief Nurse Ms Iro congratulated the European Region on developing the Regional Roadmap to carry forward the GSDNM at regional level. It is the first roadmap to be developed by a WHO Region and will be an inspiration for the other five WHO regions. The Roadmap unites the voices of both nursing and midwifery professions and of different countries. We strived to develop a comprehensive document relevant to the entire Region and to provide case studies reflecting development in its four major priority areas: leadership, jobs, education and service delivery.
With the highest support from Dr Hans Kluge, WHO Regional director for Europe, we should continue our work together and on country level to make things happen. WHO-led event presented four cases and more of those will be released in the course of 2022.
EFNNMA and WHO will develop a strategy for dissemination of these country examples and the Roadmap recommendations and will organize a series of webinars to allow in-depth exchange of experiences between the countries. Detailed information will be available early in 2022.
